‘The Mask You Live In’ Documentary Explores Becoming a ‘Real Man’ in America

Angelo State University will host a screening of the documentary film “The Mask You Live In” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, at the Plaza Verde residence hall, 1941 S. Van Buren St.

A 2015 official selection of the Sundance, Cinequest, Sonoma and San Luis Obisbo film festivals, “The Mask You Live In” was directed and co-written by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, founder of The Representation Project. The film follows young men and boys as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education and media also weigh in on the issues young men and boys face trying to become “real men.”

The film screening, sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, will be in the residence hall’s Vista Verde Conference Room. It is free and open to the public and will be followed by a panel discussion.
