The ASU Civil War Series continues with a look at religion during the war.Dr. April Holm, assistant professor of history and associate director of the Center for Civil War Research at the University of Mississippi, will present “Praying to the Same God?: Evangelicals and Sectionalism in the Civil War Era” for ASU’s Civil War Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26, in the C.J. Davidson Conference Center on the university campus.

The Davidson Center is located in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. Holm’s lecture, made possible by funding from the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, is free and open to the public.

Holm is a historian of the 19th century United States with a particular interest in sectionalism, the Civil War and Reconstruction, Christianity, and slavery and emancipation. She received a doctorate from Columbia University in 2010 with her dissertation, “A Kingdom Divided: Border Evangelicals in the Civil War Era.” Holm spent a year as a Schwartz Postdoctoral Fellow at the New School and The New-York Historical Society, then joined the University of Mississippi in 2011.

The Civil War Lecture Series, organized by ASU’s Department of History to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the conflict, is supported by the Ralph R. Chase West Texas Collection, the Office of the President, the American Library Association, Humanities Texas and the Fort Concho Foundation. The series, which began in September of 2011, will conclude on April 9, the corresponding month and day of the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox in 1865.
