Angelo State University chemistry students and faculty will join with the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts (SAMFA) to co-host Family Day Art and Science this Saturday, April 12, at SAMFA, 1 Love St. in downtown San Angelo.
The event will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and is open free to the public.  It is designed to show attendees the connections between art and science in a fun family setting.  Activities will include art and science experiments led by ASU chemistry students, art activities in the SAMFA Education Studio, interactive tours in SAMFA’s galleries led by ASU chemistry students every 30 minutes between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and chemistry magic shows at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.  Attendees can also create frozen snacks using a chemical reaction.

As Family Day Art and Science coincides with the opening weekend of the 20th annual San Angelo National Ceramic Competition, there will also be several activities focused on the chemistry and materials science applications of ceramics.  Other experiments will involve green chemistry and projecting colors using a home-made spectrometer.  The Texas Open Source Project will also be leading tutorials on open source computer software and exhibiting design techniques for SAMFA’s 3-D printer.

ASU students coordinating the activities are from the Using Chemical Literature class taught by Dr. Edith Osborne, assistant professor of chemistry.
