Angelo State Claims National Championship in Meat Science Quiz Bowl

The Angelo State University Department of Agriculture’s Meat Science Quiz Bowl Team won the Undergraduate Quiz Bowl competition at the American Meat Science Association’s (AMSA) 68^th annual Reciprocal Meat Conference (RMC) last week at the University of Nebraska.

By winning the competition, the ASU team is designated the 2015 AMSA Undergraduate Quiz Bowl National Champion. ASU emerged victorious over 29 teams from 19 universities throughout the U.S., besting Texas Tech University in the final round.

ASU entered two teams in the contest, with the winning team made up of Matthew Murdoch of Marion, Kameron Haecker of New Braunfels, Danielle Freeman of Ballinger and William Meyer of San Antonio. The ASU teams are coached by graduate students Hunter Brietzke of Marion, Lexus Weinheimer of Stonewall and Arquimides Reyes of Austin, as well as Dr. Kirk Braden of the ASU agriculture faculty.

Braden said, “Once again the quality and commitment of our students is evident as these students embody the dedication to distinction we embrace here in the Agriculture Department at ASU. We provide these students with most of the tools needed for success, but it is the individuals themselves, the teams and the coaches that add that extra effort and tenacity that pushes our programs over the top.”

This year marks ASU’s second Undergraduate Quiz Bowl national title after claiming the championship in 2006 and finishing as runner-up in 2007.

Brietzke said, “We knew we had what was needed to be successful, but when we finally believed that we could be successful, there wasn’t much that was going to stand in our way.”

Weinheimer said, “It has been an extreme honor to coach these students and to represent ASU at this national conference. The students worked extremely hard to prepare for the competition, and this is a case that proves that hard work will pay off.”

Additionally, ASU’s student product development teams placed second and third in the annual Taste of RMC contest, finishing behind only a team from Colorado State University.

“This year’s RMC was wildly successful for our students and research programs,” Braden said. “It has certainly set the bar for years to come; especially for next year when we have the honor of hosting the conference here in San Angelo at ASU.”

Other ASU students attending and competing at the RMC were Kylee Werland of Columbus, Savina Robles of San Antonio, Bryce Patton of Silverton, Gustavo Faz of Eagle Pass, Courtney Pollard of Wall, Reagan Mitchell of Palmer, Trent Schwartz of Wall and Shanequa Sanders of Killeen.
