Angelo State University’s cheer-leading squad brought home several top honors from the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Cheer Camp held July 10-13 at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Competing in Division II, ASU’s team of 15 cheerleaders earned first place in the Cheer, Sideline Performance, and Game Day categories. The team took second place in Fight Song, and Roscoe the Ram won third place among team mascots.

Cheer Coach Brandy Quigley said the Game Day award signifies the team exhibited the best spirit and ability to get the crowd excited and ready for a game among the DII schools. Quigley said,

The team also won the Most Collegiate Award, signifying that we are what college cheerleading should look like, and the Leadership Award, which is voted on by all the teams within our division. They selected ASU because they felt that we had the best leadership abilities and present ourselves the best on and off the field.

The annual cheer camp draws teams from about 30 universities, including Texas Tech University, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Puerto Rico, Midwestern State University and Louisiana State University.

Founded in 1974, UCA is a national organization that provides educational training for college and high school cheerleaders through summer camps and clinics on college campuses.
