Angelo State Ram Rugby Club Wins Cowboy Cup
Angelo State University’s Ram Rugby Football Club won the National Small College Rugby Organization’s (NSCRO) Cowboy Cup Championship, which doubles as the first round of the national Champions Cup Playoffs, March 25-26 at the University of Dallas in Irving.
The ASU team beat the University of Dallas Rugby Football Club, 40-34, in the final to claim the championship after defeating the Regis University Rugby Club, 63-15, in the semi-finals. By winning the Cowboy Cup, Ram Rugby advances to the NSCRO PacWest Region Championship to be held April 8-9 in Claremont, Calif. The winner of the regional round will advance to the Champions Cup Finals April 29-30 in Glendale, Colo.
Ram Rugby entered the NSCRO Champions Cup Playoffs after completing an undefeated regular season and winning its second straight Lonestar Conference Championship, making ASU the de facto Texas State Champion for the second straight year.

The team is coached by Preston Granzin, Nate McKinnerney and Dundy Walker. The faculty co-advisors are Dr. John Klingemann, chair of the Department of History, and Gustavo “Manny” Campos, instructor in political science.
Unlike intramural teams, ASU club sports teams are registered student organizations that are directed and funded by the Office of Student Life and overseen by the Club Sports Council.
