The performance will begin at 2:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The ASU Trumpet Ensemble and Low Brass Ensemble will be joined in concert by a select group of area high school trumpet players and an ensemble of faculty trumpet players from the San Angelo Independent School District.

The ASU Trumpet Ensemble will perform two cutting-edge recent compositions along with one standard from the brass repertoire, including “Corners” for four trumpets by Dr. Bernie Sherr, composition professor at Hardin-Simmons University. The Trumpet Ensemble is directed by Dr. John Irish, professor of music.

The ASU Low Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Ed Surface, associate professor of music, will perform four works in a wide variety of styles. Comprised of two trombones, euphonium and tuba, the ensemble will perform music by J.S. Bach and John Philip Sousa, as well as Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter Chorale” from “The Planets” and the exciting “Amparita Roca” by Jaime Texidor.

The select group of high school trumpet players includes students from San Angelo Central, Lake View, TLCA and Water Valley. Directed by Irish, the 10-member ensemble will perform the famous overture to Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville” and a special arrangement of “Darn That Dream” by Jimmy Van Heusen and Eddie De Lange. This is the sixth year in a row the select high school ensemble has participated in the SAMFA concert.

The SAISD faculty ensemble, also directed by Irish, will perform three short works by Baroque composer Georg Philip Telemann and “The Four Horsemen” by Gus Guentzel.

All four ensembles will then join together to close the concert with a specially-arranged version of the majestic “Homage March” from Edvard Grieg’s “Sigurd Jorsalfar.
