Snubbed: 7 Glaring Omissions From the 2017 CMA Awards Nominations

CMA voters must hate Jason Aldean. The country superstar — and there’s no other way to describe him — was shut out of the 2017 nominations for a second straight year. But his anti-party will be well attended.

The perennial ACM Awards nominee and winner is joined by Lauren Alaina, Kane Brown, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and even the CMA itself as snubs. Here’s a fun fact: the late Glen Campbell, Willie Nelson and pop star Pink have more nominations this year than Aldean and Blake Shelton (0) combined.

One can kind of understand how the Florida Georgia Line and Backstreet Boys collaboration was shut out (it was a love it or hate it moment for sure), but “The Fighter”? Yeah, we got nothing. The full list of 2017 CMA nominees is what happens when the scales of justice tilt away from commercial appeal to critical success. Songs from Little Big Town‘s The Breaker were praised nearly universally, yet they struggle to get heard on any sort of platform.

As always, there are some head-scratchers among the 2017 CMA Awards nominees. Song and Single of the Year nominees are the same five songs, and that’s unusual. Jon Pardi‘s “Dirt on My Boots” slipped in both categories, earning him his first major song nominations.

LoCash may be the happiest two men in country music after scoring a Vocal Duo of the Year nod. Maddie & Tae are also in that category, which is shocking given their lack of new music and their switch to a new record label. Their inclusion means Big & Rich were dropped, which we won’t quite call a snub, as they spent much of the last year between albums. Given the lack of active duos, it’s certainly unfortunate not to see the vets honored.

The 2017 CMA Awards are set to air on Wednesday, Nov. 8 on ABC, with Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood returning to co-host for the tenth straight year.
